Catalogue and digital library

The Nuova Biblioteca Manoscritta is the online catalogue which has been produced as part of a project to catalogue the manuscripts conserved in libraries in the Veneto region, as well as the name of the software system developed to describe these manuscripts. NBM provides information on the libraries that take part in the project, and material for manuscript consultation and research. NBM is promoted and funded by the Regione del Veneto, together with the Ca' Foscari University in Venice, Dipartimento di Studi Umanistici .

Cataloguing manuscript holdings in libraries in the Veneto region

The manuscript holdings conserved in the libraries in the Veneto region, covering a wide range of manuscripts of different provenance and type, are among the major collections to be found in the nation's entire documentary heritage, representing the history and culture of the Veneto region since the modern era and even earlier.

Adequate tools for the preservation and consultation of this wealth of material, however, have not always been provided, essential in making the manuscripts more accessible to the public at all levels, whether they be the occasional user or the more specialised scientific community.

In 2002 the Veneto Regional Council began to promote and fund the project for the cataloguing of all manuscript holdings conserved in libraries in the Veneto region. The principle aim is to provide a freely accessible, scientifically-based uniform catalogue.

Cataloguing was 2003 undertaken using the MANUS software system provided by the Istituto Centrale per il Catalogo Unico (ICCU), but since 2005 the Nuova Biblioteca Manoscritta software system has been adopted, which combines cataloguing, management and an OPAC system of the manuscripts in the libraries in the Veneto region.

The libraries taking part in the project identify the collections to be catalogued and choose the staff to undertake the task of cataloguing.

The Veneto Regional Council has assigned the scientific and technological coordination of the project to the Ca' Foscari University in Venice, Dipartimento di Studi Umanistici. The scientific manager of the project is Paolo Eleuteri.
